Sue Saunders creates contemporary Sailors' Valentines highlighted by intricate, original designs, using seashells from around the world. Her first experience with this amazing art form was in 2006, when she was looking for something special to incorporate into her seashell-themed wedding on the Caribbean island of Saint John. A self-taught artisan, Sue models her Sailors' Valentines after a traditional style that began in the 1800’s by native women in Barbados. Homesick sailors purchased Sailors' Valentines, often with sentimental endearments, for their sweethearts at home. As a high school science teacher (Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, Ecology), Sue savors her time away from academics, marveling at her collection of shells and the patterns that form when she designs her valentine boxes.
